A vintage tractor fleet, threatened turtle species, notorious bushranger and local cricketing hero are all part of the story of Bendemeer, a charming NSW rural village on the New England Highway, 5 hours north of Sydney.
The home town of 480 permanent residents was established between Tamworth and Armidale 150 years ago and became a business and social hub for district sheep and cattle graziers. Farm workers live alongside service personnel, and tourism is a burgeoning industry as visitors book into the local pub or holiday park to experience its laid-back country vibe.
