Tender steak, balmy evenings and Arafura Sea sunsets make a heady combination for diners at Char Darwin.

For the past 13 years, Char Darwin has been the northern city’s version of a destination restaurant. It has brought top-quality char-grilled Angus and Wagyu steak to the table, teaming it up with the freshest Top End seafood. Throw in a climate-controlled cellar full of collectable wines, and Char Darwin has all the ingredients to celebrate special occasions or impress out-of-town visitors.

Char Darwin is the brainchild of cattle judge and restaurant entrepreneur John Kilroy who grew up on a cattle station in south-west Queensland. Early in his long hospitality career he realised that “most complaints come back about the steak” so he focused on serving the perfect steak. He established a clutch of successful restaurants in Brisbane, including Cha Cha Char, specialising in steak, Jellyfish, where seafood stars, and Italian eatery Il Centro.
